About Transport Info
Transport Info was developed as a web site established under the ALGIN (Australian Local Government Information Network) banner. It was funded through the final tranche of the Local Government Development Program (LGDP) to provide information to Councils on transport issues.
ALGIN can be accessed by clicking on the logo at the right of the ALGA homepage. ALGIN contains links to groups of local government sites as well as links to specialist technical sites, of which Transport Info is one. The other main technical site 'Towards Best Practices' was also funded under the LGDP and can be accessed from Transport Info as well as ALGIN.
A key feature of Transport Info is the asset management model, whose application through the internet, was also funded under the same LGDP.
However, the site offers a lot more to Councils as a means for them to keep up to date with contemporary transport issues facing local government.
A technical feature of the site is the internet window to ALGA's database on road and bridge expenditure for NSW, VIC, WA, QLD and SA Councils, collected through the various State Grants Commissions and Local Government Departments.
There is also a window to ALGA’s database of Council contact details, including e-mail addresses.
Of particular interest at the present time, is the work of the Steering Committee established following the Moree Rural Roads Congress. The Committee has prepared its report which the Chairman Ted Butcher presented to the National General Assembly of Local Government on 6th December. The report is now available on the site.
Progress with ALGA’s current Austroads Projects - 'Heavy Vehicle Loading of Low Trafficked Roads', is also provided and while the data collection from Councils has been slow, the project will progress to an interesting conclusion by mid 2001.
