Gravel Material Quality Analysis

This analysis is based on a paper "Using a Computerised Model to manage your Unsealed Roads Network", Shepherd 2003.

The calculations are sourced from Lea, Paige-Green & Jones, 1999, “Neural networks for performance prediction on unsealed roads”, RTR.  This paper is also referenced in the ARRB 'Unsealed Roads' Manual, revised version.

The quality analysis is assessed by the gravel material's shrinkage product and grading co-efficient shown on the "Gravel Material Quality Graph" below, where the shrinkage product (SP) = Linear shrinkage x % passing 0.425 mm sieve, and the Grading coefficient (Gc) = (% passing 26.5 mm sieve - % passing 2 mm sieve) x (% passing 4.75 mm sieve) / 100.
